2023 was an excellent year for smart home growth. The current number of smart homes worldwide is estimated to be about 300 million and experts expect the smart home technology market to grow to about $138 billion in 2026. Energy efficiency and automation have been top trends within the sector in 2023 and we have seen consumers seeking out products that help to save them time and money, while also improving their security, energy management and overall wellbeing.
But now it's time to look towards the future. What will be big in terms of 2024 smart home technology trends? Will more major advancements be made or will the time come to fully implement and build upon the advancements the industry has seen in recent years? Our team has selected some key trends we believe will continue to take the spotlight into 2024 when it comes to the continued success of the smart home market.
Trend #1: Smarter Automation
2024 will see smart devices become more efficient. The addition of smart sensors or smoother integrations can help to run systems such as heating or lighting more smoothly and adjust and regulate energy usage to create a more eco-friendly household.
Interoperability and convenience are at the forefront of what we wish to achieve as a brand.
This is why we have created the Yale Smart Security Ecosystem to offer you smarter and more convenient integrations between your Yale devices! For smarter home protection, our Yale Smart Alarm* integrates with Linus®, so that the moment you open your door using Linus® your alarm will disarm automatically, to avoid any unnecessary or accidental alarm triggers. For even more security and convenience you can also set up automations such as privacy mode which will stop your Yale Smart Indoor Camera* from recording once your smart lock is unlocked or your alarm is disarmed for extra privacy within your own home. You can also grant permanent or temporary access remotely using one single code for Linus®, your Smart Gate and Garage Opener, Smart Safe and Smart Cabinet Lock using the Yale Home app as part of the ecosystem. This system is perfect for rental home hosts as it grants easy access to guests for any safe, cabinet, or doors on the property, then lets you easily revoke access for all once their stay is complete.
We also have integrations with several leading smart home brands to bring you even more automated convenience as part of the ecosystem. For example, with Linus® you can trigger actions like turning off lights or turning down thermostats when you are leaving home once your door locks, and turning each system back on as soon as your door unlocks. To help your house to better conserve energy.
In 2024 we anticipate that the levels of automation seen in smart devices will continue to get smarter. We will also be expanding our own Smart Security Ecosystem and range of Yale Smart devices, to provide you with automation that requires minimal interaction or interference from you for a truly smart home so look forward to more news on that very soon!

Trend #2: AI Integration
Artificial intelligence (or AI as it is more commonly referred to) has become a major technology player over the past year, and we expect to see it expand further into smart security devices to become an integral part of every smart home.
Voice assistants are expected to evolve using machine learning to expand their capabilities and help them do a better job recognising the commands and speech patterns of different accents to make their results more accurate and interactions feel more natural. For example, this would make the process of controlling your home access using your Linus® Smart Lock run more smoothly. Thanks to integrations with leading smart assistants like Amazon Alexa or Google Home when your doorbell rings you can check who is at the door using your screen-enabled voice assistant, and then use a voice command to open your door for your guest using Linus® without having to move from your couch!
AI can also be used to help smart security devices better adapt to your daily schedule and optimise the security of your living space. For example, our new range of Yale Smart Cameras features AI human and pet detection to reduce the level of false alarm notifications sent to your phone. Our new Yale Smart Video doorbell also has AI capabilities that will alert you if a parcel has arrived on your doorstep to ensure that you never miss a delivery again, this product as well as the camera range will be launching soon. These developments will help not only create smarter security devices, but they will also make these products indispensable within your home.
Trend #3: Matter
As smart security devices become more intuitive, there is a greater level of demand from consumers for their devices to be more interconnected. Thanks to the new Matter Standard, a new certification that will make it easier for devices from different brands to become interconnected, you will be able to easily manage and control your entire home.
With the majority of new-generation devices supporting this protocol, seamless smart home integration is set to become the new standard. Yale is currently aligning with our partners to develop matter-compliant solutions, with integrations anticipated sometime during 2024 to help provide you with a smoother hassle-free security experience when using the Yale Smart Security Ecosystem.
The future looks bright for smart security technology. Keep an eye on these trends as we progress into 2024 and watch this space as Yale has many upcoming new and innovative products that might just address several of the ideas that we have explored today!
